A First

Today was cool and very windy. It excited the birds.

One crow flew overhead like a wind surfer, riding the waves. As scavengers, they don’t have very admirable reputations, but obviously they perform very necessary services. (I often wonder what happens to alligators when they die!).

Crows are quite smart, too, evidently. Some will leave gifts if you provide them food. The gratitude of crows. Today, the one impressed me in another way. He was winds surfing! Plainly enjoying himself, he soared on the gusts of wind, never moving his wings, just going where the wind blew. I was entranced.

And then, as the wind shifted and he had to put effort into his movement, my eyes caught a swift blue streak. It was this spectacular bird. I see her often, but she sits still for such brief periods that I’ve never been able to get a photo. Now here she is in all her fuzzy glory, the female of the belted kingfisher.

Musical bird. Sounds like a clock alarm. It used to hang out in the oak tree overlooking the house and make the alarm sound every morning around the same time! Today I found out this was the bird doing that.

And here are my regulars:

The pair. I have enjoyed watching these two hang out together for two months.
