Light VI

February 15, 2016

The sun did not break through the clouds all day today. I thought I would have to resort to capturing an artificial light source. But then I noticed the glowing reflection beneath me. Somehow the water boosted the light through the heavy clouds. Aperture: ƒ/4 Camera: COOLPIX P900 Taken: 15 February, 2016 Focal length: 24.1mm ISO: 100 Shutter speed: 1/1600s

Light V

February 14, 2016

I like sunlight and trees, it seems. Morning sunlight through tree branches, particularly. This is yesterday‘s tree, in full. Just below this tree lies the water way, where the family of otters swam by on their way to a successful fishing expedition in Otter Bay. It stands just at crest of the yard before it slopes down to the water. It is one of the oak trees about the yard…

Light IV

February 13, 2016

This light challenge is more difficult than I expected. (Isn’t this always so!). I often think of the fall of light on an animal or object when I am engaged in capturing it. Yet, because I was always more focused on the thing, I’ve not thought of the light itself as a thing to photograph. Which is why this is an excellent exercise. Difficult, but excellent. This is daybreak on…

Light III

February 12, 2016

This image could be titled ‘worship’. It is, at any rate, what occurs to me when I look at it. I was actually shooting directly into the sun. I don’t know enough yet about handling lens flare, but I liked the image and it fit the theme. This is my bird blind. The spot from which I scope out the landscape. It is where the (empty) birdfeeder hangs outside the…

Light II

February 12, 2016

I didn’t post yesterday, but I did take the photo for Light II. These three chimneys in the neighborhood. At some times of day, the light hits them just right. As now. Aperture: ƒ/6.3 Camera: NIKON D3300 Taken: 11 February, 2016 Focal length: 190mm ISO: 200 Shutter speed: 1/640s

Light

February 10, 2016

For the next week, I am going to post here on or Instagram a photo under this theme. My interpretation of what that means will vary. Today, it is this image of the afternoon sun through a neighbor’s vibrant tree. I do aspire to be a better photographer and photography as an art is only about light. I don’t have any idea what I am doing, but I can learn…

Never Alone

January 31, 2016

Much went on in the backyard today, but trying to record it now would be a waste. After I have sorted pictures, I’ll get to that. Meanwhile, in other news… I may have given the impression that I go hunting for wild animals on my own. I do not. Over the past six months, BlackCat has been on nearly every excursion. She even ventured to enter the canoe twice but…

Otters

January 21, 2016

The sound did not pull my attention. Too often had I been frustrated by turning just in time to see only the spreading waves. I never managed to see the fish themselves break the surface, but only the water’s concentric rings dispersing. I never quite have my eyes in the right place. So I didn’t turn around. Straightening my back in mild irritation, I pulled my elbows in and grasped…

The Storm – Before and After

January 17, 2016

Early this morning the birds twittered, the squirrels chattered, and the water rocked the fallen leaves gently, gently. The little birds were active and noisy. The waders were missing: no egrets or herons, no ibises. Then the wind came. The bright blue sky amid the high light clouds swiftly overtaken by thick clouds, dark clouds. Then the birds were silent for a bit, the squirrels were motionless and all that…

Into the Swamp

January 16, 2016

This afternoon, the backyard journey extended several miles to the north end of Tampa – Lettuce Lake Park. It is a 240 acre park with a tremendous boardwalk over a swamp that feels almost primitive. The sight of alligators lounging on fallen logs, and snakes curled around themselves next to pond lilies do nothing but enhance that feeling. It is a wonderful place, a half an hour away, that I…
